12th Grade Transition Math Course:

Hawai’i P-20 assisted in implementing a statewide Smarter Balanced policy which includes the development of a 12th grade transition mathematics course for students scoring a “2” on the 11th grade Smarter Balanced Assessment. The “Introduction to College Mathematics” course is designed to prepare targeted 12th graders for non-STEM, college-level math courses at any of the ten University of Hawai‘i campuses. This course was piloted at four HIDOE schools during the 2015-16 school year: Farrington, Kapa‘a, Pearl City, and Waialua. Due to the success of the program, eleven additional schools were added in the 2016-17 school year: Aiea, Castle, Kahuku, King Kekaulike, Leilehua, Mililani, Molokai, Pahoa, Waiakea, Waianae, and Waimea. Five additional schools, Kauai, Kealakehe, Kohala, Konawaena, and Waipahu joined in the 2017-18 school year for a total of twenty high schools on five islands.

12th Grade English Language Arts Transition Course:

During the 2017-2018 school year, a 12th grade English Language Arts transition course (Expository Reading and Writing) was piloted within a few select high schools. Developed after a year of working with Hawai‘i DOE teachers and University of Hawai’i English Language Arts faculty, this course was piloted at five schoosl across the state and was scaled to _____ schools in the 2018-19 school year.

For students who are interested in enrolling in a University of Hawai’i campus after their high school graduation, participation in the ELA or Math Transition Course in their senior year could provide them with the opportunity to place into a specific 100-level English or Math course. More information is available here.

Middle School Algebra Readiness Course:

The Middle School Algebra Readiness Course is an intervention/workshop designed for students who scored a “2” on their 5th grade Smarter Balanced Math Assessment and is modeled, in part, on the mathematical mindsets work of Dr. Jo Boaler of Stanford University (who was a keynote speaker at a previous Math Summit organized by Hawai’i P-20). The pilot program started in the 2019-20 school year with teachers from Moanalua and Wahiawa Middle Schools, and is focused on helping prepare students for algebra by the 9th grade.
